Sea World

Over the July 4th weekend we surprised the kids with a trip to Sea World in San Antonio. During the previous week they had been doing water animal themed things and this was the big surprise to end off the week. I came home early from work on Thursday and we told them about the surprise and Andrew was so excited he asked "When do we get to go?" When we told him, "Right now, we are leaving now" he got this priceless expression that was a mixture of I can't believe it and I'm so excited I'm going to explode.

First off was a visit to feed the dolphins.

Caroline wanted to ride the carousel but once she was on she didn't actually want to ride on one of the horses so she just sat on the bench with Jen.

Andrew desperately wanted me to take a picture of this fish tank and then begged that I include it on the website.

At the Azul show. We saw this show last time we visited Sea World back in 2006 and it was largely the same though the boys didn't remember it.

Andrew and I went into the bird cage to feed the Lorikeets. You purchased a cup of nectar and holding it in your hand they let you in the cage and the birds would fly down and drink from the cup.

On the way home stopped at The Alamo. This year in 4th grade Alex is going to be studying Texas history so we figured it would be nice to visit.

  Trip to Sea World.
This is the one of the best pictures from the weekend. Here's the story.

Alex was really excited he was finally tall enough to ride on some of the bigger rides, like the "Steel Eel" and "The Great White" roller coasters. Those that know me know that I am really not a big fan of heights, I mean I get sweaty palms going up the escalators at sports stadiums. Now Alex really wanted to ride the Steel Eel and Jen said there was no way that she was going so I had to suck it up and ride with him. The only reason I could even consider going on this ride was that it didn't actually go upside down.

While going through the line I had to listen to a torrent of "Are you a Chicken?" from Alex who was feeling very confident about the whole ordeal. (I guess after riding the Shamu coaster he was feeling pretty cocky.)

According to the wikipedia entry the Steel Eel is a "hyper" coaster that rises 150ft up, has a 150ft foot drop, and a top speed of 65 miles an hour with max G force of 3.5.

On the slow journey up to the top of the coaster Alex started to loose some of his confidence and kept asking,

"We have to be at the top now." "It's got to be here now right?"

"No, there's still a little bit more to go." I kept telling him.

When we hit the top and started racing down to the bottom he was silent, mainly because I don't think he could talk, and after going through the next peak all I heard was,

"I'm never doing this again, I'm never doing this again, I'm never doing this again!"

This was the picture they took at the bottom of one of the dips and I think Alex's expression says everything.
