Party Pictures and Aquathon

It’s really been quite a while since I’ve had time to update the website so on this long weekend I thought I would take some time and get caught up. First, I posted pictures of Alex’s birthday a couple of weeks back but I never did mention it here. In the meantime I think I’ve talked with most people and it seems that most everyone else has discovered it on their own but for those haven’t there you go.

On to the new pages! Hot off the…presses….digital bits….whatever catchy phrase you use now a days, I’ve finished Andrew’s birthday pictures. On the day of his actual birthday we made some cupcakes, put two candles in them, and had a little celebration at the house and after dinner he opened gifts from the family. Andrew has caught on to the gift receiving/opening idea much quicker then Alex did. He sees the gifts all wrapped in fancy birthday paper and he knows exactly how to get in there and open them up. I suppose he learned that from his brother.

Last weekend we had a bigger party at the house where we had some friends over for a Bar-B-Q. A couple of days before the party I got the Bar-B-Q out to check it over to make sure it weathered the winter ok. It would be more then a little embarrassing to have people over for hamburgers and sausage and not have a working Bar-B-Q. When I stored it away before the winter it was already in pretty sad shape and the winter months were not kind to it. On one end the burner element had completely disintegrated into rust and when I started it up only two giant flames shot out at weird angles from the burner producing a sound more like a propane torch then a Bar-B-Q. So the day before the party we had to go out and get a new grill and I spent a good portion of the night putting it all together.

Since Andrew is very into Sesame Street at the moment we had a Sesame Street themed party. Jen was her ever creative self and made a fantastic Count von Count birthday cake and she made these super creative Sesame Street characters to hang on the walls. Here’s the pictures for our family celebration and the cook out party.

On the morning of Andrew’s big party Jen had convinced me earlier in the week to sign up for my first race of the year, an Aquathon. It was a two mile run, 400 meter swim, and then a two mile run again. For the last couple of months I’ve actually been running one day a week and swimming two days a week as my exercise so this seem to fit right in with my training. There were only thirty or so people signed up for the race and I managed to place 5th overall. After the first run I was in eighth place, I moved up to fourth in the water, and then only one person managed to pass me on the second run. The deciding factor in doing the race was the fact it was taking a place a couple blocks from the house so Jen, Alex, and Andrew came to cheer me on. Jen took a couple of pictures which I put up here.

Playset Pictures Up

I’ve got the pictures of the playset posted on the web site here. Like I said on those pages we decided to get both Alex and Andrew a playset for their birthdays. I guess it’s kind of handy that both of their birthday’s are so close together so it’s easy to get them both one big gift.

So far I would have to say it’s a big hit though you have to watch Andrew around i since he occasionally likes to pretend that he’s a daredevil and climb in and around things he shouldn’t be. I’m just hoping that this thing doesn’t lead to another hospital visit.

Taste of Plano

We all went to the taste of Plano tonight and I have to admit that I ended up eating so much food that right now I fell a bit sick. Well actually Jen feels a bit sick too.

The general premise of the whole event is for one low price you can sample the food from about thirty different restaurants. When it’s all over you’ve ended up eating stuff from BBQ ribs, subs, goulash, brownies, cookies, ice cream, gorge, gorge, gorge. Taken on their own these are all fine foods but I’m pretty sure these foods were never meant to be combined into one meal.

One of the things Jen and I found rather puzzling was the people that walked around with multiple bags of food from different vendors. It would never have occurred to me to walked around with a bag collecting stuff. And it wasn’t just one or two people with bags either. Those of us without a bag were in the minority.

Hey Dad, I’m having fun at Mardi Gras

It certainly has been a while since I’ve managed to post anything but things have been so busy lately that I just haven’t been able to spend any time making updates. In fact in the past two months we really haven’t even taken any pictures so I haven’t been able to fake like I’m keeping the site updated by posting pictures. Here’s a quick run down of the last couple of weeks.

Jen and the kids got to take a trip to New Orleans for Mardi Gras but it happened to fall on the same day that I needed to be at work for yearly maintenance activities so guess what, I didn’t get to go. I know Alex had a great time because he would keep me up to date on all the exciting stuff by giving me call from the parades, called me waiting for parades, or calling me on his way home from the parades making sure I knew about all the cool throws he caught.

“Dad, you’ll never guess what. We caught FIVE footballs and you know who we saw? Sean Payton!” He was so excited half the time he didn’t know what he wanted to tell me next.

Andrew had a good time too and by the end of it all he started to figure out how to hold out his hands in the “Throw me something mister!” position. They only came home with a small fraction of the beads they caught but Andrew still loves to put them on and parade around the house.

I think it’s now official that Alex has gone to more Mardi Gras parades then I have. Oh well, I guess there’s always next year.

Rhyming Words

When I picked up Alex from school today I asked him what he did at school and he sad they worked on rhyming words.

“What rhyming words do you do?” I asked him.

“I did the word talk”

“So what rhymes with talk?”

He paused for a moment and then said “Dad, what is the piece of equipment football players wear to protect their penis?”

“A jock”

“Ya, talk rhymes with jock.”

Sun Showers ?!@%

When I was coming home from work yesterday I got half way here and I ran into one of the fiercest sunshowers I’ve experienced in a long time. It was coming down so hard it was difficult to see two or three car lengths in front which was made even more difficult by the fact the sun was glaring off the water on my windshield.

I’ve never been a big fan of sunshowers. Pick one or the the other already, sun or rain, you can’t have it both ways. With that mother nature came to her senses and the rain stopped. Well, ok, maybe it didn’t happen quite that fast but by the time I was home the ran was pretty much over.

My brooding over the silly ran and the forty five minute commute through Saturday afternoon rush hour which is another one of my pet peeves by the way. Why does it take me just as long to get home from work on Saturday afternoon as it does during the week? I just couldn’t catch a break yesterday. Anyway, when I got home I noticed that Jen’s parents had sent her traditional birthday King Cake, yes.

After dinner Jen cut us all a piece for dessert and before he could take his first bit Jen reminded Alex to be careful since there is a little plastic baby in the cake. He was about to pick up his piece when he stopped and looked a little concerned. The cake came with a “History of the King Cake” brochure that I thought might put his mind at ease so I started reading it.

“In the past such things as coins, beans, pecans or peas were hidden inside each King Cake. Today, a tiny plastic baby is the common prize.”

“He, he, isn’t that funny, imagine a cake with peas on the inside.” I don’t think Alex found this funny at all. After a couple of minutes without touching his cake he asked me about the peas inside. I tried to assure him that this cake didn’t have peas in it but between the baby and the peas he wasn’t having any of it. More cake for the rest of us, Whoo Hoo.
