The only thing was that the race was scheduled to start at 8:00 and we all had to be there for 7:30 for race prep. After being postponed a number of times things finally got under way at 10:00. The lightening had stopped around nine but the rain didn’t subside until part way through the swim. In addition to being delayed the race organizers decided that the lake was still too choppy to let us out in the open water area so the 2 mile swim course was shortened to 1000 in the sheltered area. In fact everyone’s swim was shortened to 1000 even if you signed up for the 1 mile or 2 mile swim portion. The only difference between the groups was how far you run after the swim.
I was pretty pleased with the way it turned out. I was fifth overall for the people doing 1000 swim 10k run and I managed to complete the 10k in just over 49 minutes which is a pretty good time for me.
Jen and Alex were troopers considering they were out there with me the whole time.
Now for the sushi experience………I don’t think it’s much of a secret that I’m not a big sushi fan. Can’t say that I’ve really tried it but the whole concept of eating raw fish just doesn’t appeal to me. I don’t eat raw beef so why would I eat raw fish? I just don’t understand it.
Anyway, Saturday night we went out with Kelly, Wade, and John, (Wade’s cousin) to a fancy schmancy restaurant downtown. They have this thing going on called Restaurant Week were each week a different restaurant is featured and for $30 you get a three course meal where you get a choice between a couple of items on each course, appetizer, main meal, and dessert.
So I’m going over the menu and for an appetizer the only thing that sounds good to me is the yellow fin tuna. I didn’t think anything of until they brought it out. They waiter placed in front of me this very nicely prepared plate with three slices of very raw, very pink, yellow fin tuna. I tired to brush it off as if it was no big deal and this is exactly what I had in mind when I ordered it to begin with, but honestly, I’m not that good a liar.
I managed to muscle my way through the tuna so now all you nay sayers out there can’t tell me I don’t like sushi because I’ve never tried it. I’ll admit that it tasked better then I anticipated but I just couldn’t get over the texture. It’s raw for crying out loud. It’s chewy, kind of rubbery, and has this odd coolness while sitting in your mouth. I’m sorry but fish just wasn’t meant to be eaten this way.
